Havoc

Havoc
The cry given up permitting an army to break order and search out spoil and plunder; but it was given only when victory was clear and the enemy no threat. To cry 'Havoc' during battle was liable to invite defeat and was thus punishable by death. Shakespeare uses the word somewhat anach-ronistically in Julius Caesar: 'Cry Havoc, and let slip the dogs of war.' Elsewhere he uses it as we do for confusion and disorder. [< OldFr. havo = pillage, plunder]
